The 14 Best Coupon Apps to Save Money

Do you use coupon apps every time you shop?

If not, you could be missing out on some serious savings this Christmas. Gone are the days when you have to clip, organize and haul hundreds of coupons out the door with you. Now all you need is your trusty smartphone loaded up with the best coupon apps out there. Here are 15 of our favorite savings apps to get you started before you start tackling your Christmas list.

14 of Our Favorite Coupon Apps

1. Honey

Life’s about to get a whole lot sweeter! Allow us to introduce you to Honey. Install the app on your web browser, and Honey will search through the best coupons available for the website you’re shopping on. It’ll even apply it to your cart at checkout, with no hassle for you. Yeah, it’s basically like magic.

How many times have you had to google “coupon code” for the item you’re thinking about buying? Then, you have to sift through all the possible options and test code after code. Sometimes they work, but sometimes you strike out. And at the end of it all, you’ve probably spent a good chunk of your valuable time searching the web to save a buck. Honey takes care of all that searching for you.

  • Standout feature: When you’re shopping on Amazon, Honey will tell you if another seller offers the item at a cheaper price.
  • Best used for: Shopping online and comparing prices
  • Platforms: Desktop app

2. SnipSnap

Have you ever tried to carry around a stack of Bed Bath and Beyond coupons with you? It’s like lugging around a pile of oversized, cardboard playing cards. SnipSnap feels your pain, and that’s why they created their coupon app. Farewell forever, clunky coupon binder!

Also, when you’re out and about and find something you want to buy, take a picture of it with SnipSnap. The app will bring up a list of available coupons and sales for that specific item. SnipSnap will even let you know if it’s cheaper to buy it online or at another store.

  • Standout feature: Easy cost comparison—just by snapping a photo!
  • Best used for: Shopping in store and comparing prices
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

3. Ibotta

With this discount app, just scan item barcodes to find out if any rebates are available. You don’t have to do anything at the register when you’re checking out! Instead, upload a picture of your receipt into the app, and Ibotta will give you cash back. Once your total adds up to $20, you can cash out and put that extra money toward your future grocery budget or a gift card.

With this app, you won’t see immediate savings at checkout like you would with a coupon. But you will get actual cash back in your pocket to use later on down the road—which we think is worth the wait.

  • Standout feature: Cash back that adds up over time
  • Best used for: Getting “paid” for items you’re already purchasing at the store
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

4. Shopkick

This app is similar to other savings apps out there that use rebates, but instead of getting cash for your points, you can redeem them for gift cards. That’s pretty great—who doesn’t love a store gift card?

But here’s the best part: You can earn points (they call them “kicks”) just by walking into a store. And if you’re up for a little scavenger hunt, you can earn even more points for scanning products they list throughout the store. You don’t even have to spend money to earn a little kickback! (See what we did there?)

  • Standout feature: No need to make a purchase to rack up points
  • Best used for: Anytime you walk into a store
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

5. Checkout 51

The nice thing about Checkout 51 is that it’s not as brand specific as some of the others. For example, you’ll earn cash back for buying generic things like bananas, green onions and apples. In addition to that, you’ll get bonuses just for buying any item at select stores like Costco or Walmart.

  • Standout feature: Cash back for generic items
  • Best used for: Grocery stores or warehouse stores
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

6. Target’s Cartwheel and REDcard

If you shop at Target, this thing will quickly become your best buddy. Be sure to check the Cartwheel offers in the Target app before you head into the store. It’s common to find coupons and major savings on groceries as well as clothing and home goods throughout the store.

Remember to look into Target’s REDcard as well. It gets you 5% off every purchase in the store or online, plus free shipping. Just make sure you sign up for their debit card option, not their credit card option.

  • Standout feature: Scoring deals on select items with Cartwheel, plus an immediate savings of 5% off each purchase with the Target REDcard
  • Best used for: Saving money at Target
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

7. ShopSavvy

ShopSavvy considers itself a price comparison tool, but it’s really more like a full-blown shopping experience with multiple features. The app not only compares prices for the items you’re looking at buying, but also displays user reviews. Think of it like Amazon with a built-in robot that helps you find the cheapest price available at any store!

  • Standout feature: Price comparisons and user reviews
  • Best used for: Finding the cheapest price on the item you’re searching for
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

8. RetailMeNot

Remember to check this major coupon code hub before making an online or in store purchase. Just type in the store you’re planning to shop at, and RetailMeNot will list all of its active offers. Cha-ching!

  • Standout feature: A one-stop shop for all your coupon code needs
  • Best used for: Scoring a 20% coupon to your favorite store
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

9. GasBuddy

Here’s another oldie but goodie. GasBuddy will search your local area and find the cheapest gas prices near you. Then all you have to do is get yourself to the pump and fill up.

And if you want to save even more money, you can use GasBuddy’s card. No, it’s not a credit card, but it’s not quite a debit card either. Instead, it’s a gas payment card that links to your checking account. Every time you use it, you’ll save five cents per gallon at the gas pump. GasBuddy says its users save an average of $340 a year when using their app combined with the GasBuddy loyalty card.(1)

  • Standout feature: Gas payment card that links to your banking account
  • Best used for: Finding the cheapest gas prices near you
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

10. Dosh

Dosh is a typical cash-back app, but it cuts out some of the hassle from the process. They boast that you’ll be able to take advantage of cash-back rebate offers without using UPC scanning, receipt photos or promo codes.

So, how does it work? Well, you link your debit card to the app, and then it watches what you purchase and dishes cash back to you accordingly. We know . . . it’s kind of creepy that it watches what you spend. But then again, welcome to the internet.

  • Standout feature: Cash-back app without the pain of scanning receipts
  • Best used for: Getting cash back for online purchases
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

11. GoodRx

Prescription drug costs can derail your budget quickly. But how do you know if you’re paying too much for your prescriptions? Check out the GoodRx app! Just jot down the name of your prescription in the search bar along with your ZIP code. The app will show you which pharmacies in your area carry it, as well as how cheap (or not) it is. Plus, they often offer extra coupons for even more savings!

  • Standout feature: Finding the cheapest prescriptions in your local area
  • Best used for: Buying prescription medication
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

12. Coupons.com

Where have all the good, old-fashioned coupons gone? They’re right here—only better! Download the Coupons.com app to your smartphone, and you’ll find a bunch of manufacturer coupons to sift through. Coupon clippers, welcome to the digital age. This is the granddaddy of coupon apps!

Sometimes you’ll have to actually print out the physical coupon (hey, it’s a lost art!), but some stores will let you take a photo of the coupon and use your phone to scan it. It’s as simple as that!

  • Standout feature: Coupons galore
  • Best used for: Immediate savings on groceries, clothing and household items
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

13. Receipt Hog

This one is really similar to Ibotta. Just scan your receipt and you’ll get points for specific items you purchased. All these points add up, and you can cash them out once you hit the point threshold.

By now you might be thinking, Not another rebate app! Isn’t using one or two good enough? No way! By using multiple discount apps, you could be getting numerous rebates for the same item! And different items might be eligible with different apps. Make every receipt work for you!

  • Standout feature: Collecting points for specific items you purchase
  • Best used for: Shopping at any store that gives you a receipt
  • Platforms: Available on iOS and Android

14. Hytch Rewards/NuRide

Okay, technically these aren’t like the other coupon apps, but they can still save you money. If you live near a big city, look for apps that reward you for carpooling.

These kinds of savings apps will put some cash back into your pocket for things you’re already doing, like driving to work or going out Christmas shopping with friends. In Tennessee, we have Hytch Rewards, which lets users earn money for every ride they hitch with each other. Carpooling apps just like Hytch or NuRide might be available in your region too.

  • Standout feature: Cash back for an everyday activity
  • Best used for: Carpooling with coworkers, friends or your spouse
  • Platforms: Hytch is available on iOS and Android, and NuRide is available on iOS.

Get out your budget and make sure to stick to it. Your budget should be your number one priority before you start downloading all these apps like crazy.
