Housing and Utility Savings Hacks

With these tips, you can cut back on some of the most common utility bills and your housing budget line too.

1. Save on your electric bill.

  • Replace your air filters regularly.
  • Only run appliances when they’re full.
  • Turn off the dang lights when you aren’t using them. (You aren’t Motel 6.)
  • Wash your clothes in cold water.

2. Save on your water bill.

  • Take quicker showers. (Note: We didn’t say fewer.)
  • Don’t run appliances unless they’re full.
  • Turn off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth, shampooing your hair, or shaving.
  • Install a low-flow showerhead.
  • Use the outdoor hose less by sweeping the driveway instead of spraying it down and turning the water off when you lather up the car.

3. Save on your rent.

If you’re renting, first of all—it’s not a waste of money! Wait until you’re financially ready to buy a home, or it’ll be a burden, not a blessing. But while you’re renting, there are some smart ways to cut back on rent costs.

  • Get a roommate to split the rent!
  • Sign a longer lease.
  • Move to a cheaper place.
