So you’re looking to live in the land of peach trees and the home of the Braves (the Atlanta Braves, that is). But before you pack up the moving truck, let’s talk safety. We dug into the numbers to find the safest cities in Georgia so you don’t have to. Whether you’re a parent, newlywed or empty nester, knowing where it’s safe to live is a pretty big deal. Let’s get to it.
Top 10 Safest Cities in Georgia
We’ve done the research, and the results are in. The top safest cities in Georgia are:
- Douglas
- Holly Springs
- Rincon
- Jefferson
- Johns Creek
- Milton
- Peachtree City
- Braselton
- Port Wentworth
- Grovetown
Here’s how we came up with the list: We looked at the most recent FBI crime data for Georgia cities with more than 10,000 residents. Then we ranked them based on the lowest combined rates of violent crimes and property crimes per 1,000 residents in a year.
But we didn’t stop there. We also factored in how many full-time law enforcement officers each city has per 1,000 residents. Why? Because fewer officers usually means the city doesn’t need as many—a strong sign it’s a safe place to live. The safest cities had the lowest scores, and the cities with the 10 lowest scores made up our list.
Just remember—lists like this are a great starting point, but not the final word. Talk to locals, visit the area if you can, and do your own digging before you make a move.
1. Douglas
Let’s kick things off in southern Georgia with Douglas—a small city that packs a big punch. This place is steeped in history, especially at the World War II Flight Training Museum, where you can walk through vintage aircraft and the original barracks used by wartime pilots. If nature’s more your thing, you’ll find plenty of places to fish, hike or play a round of golf. And yes, that counts as nature therapy.
Agriculture is the bread and butter here (think peanuts, poultry and cotton), but there’s still a neighborhood for you even if you don’t own a tractor. Douglas is safe, quiet and full of Southern hospitality—definitely worth a look if you’re thinking about a move.

2. Holly Springs
Holly Springs is nestled in Cherokee County, just north of Atlanta—and yes, the name comes from actual holly trees and a spring that once bubbled in the center of town. It’s a place where nature lovers feel right at home thanks to local gems like J. B. Owens Park, Hickory Trails Park and Olde Rope Mill Park. Plus, when it gets hot, you can cool off at Toonigh Creek Falls or the Cherokee County Aquatic Center.
This city checks a lot of boxes for families: affordable housing, excellent schools and a growing job market. And if your dream job isn’t right in town, Atlanta’s a short commute away.

What started as a small 1890s railroad town is now known for excellent schools, safe neighborhoods and reliable police and fire departments—no wonder it’s a top pick for young families.
Located just 20 miles from downtown Savannah and under an hour from the Atlantic coast, Rincon makes weekend beach trips a breeze. And if sports are more your thing, the city has a nice tennis complex and golf course to keep you busy.

4. Jefferson
The city of Jefferson—named after former president Thomas Jefferson—began as a Native American settlement and was later selected as the county seat of Jackson County in 1806. Today, families love visiting O5 Farms—a family-owned and operated farm where you can pick your own blueberries, pet cute farm animals, and even stay the night in a rustic retreat. If you’re feeling adventurous, Atlanta Sport Flying at the nearby Jackson County Airport offers scenic flights over lakes and mountains—and they’ll even let you take the controls (if you dare).
The housing market in Jefferson is more affordable than in many other parts of Georgia, with options for a variety of budgets. It’s a great spot for first-time buyers or anyone looking for small-town charm without breaking the bank.

Coming in at number five is the northeastern Atlanta suburb of Johns Creek. This city is known for having some of the best schools in the metro area—plus a few top-notch golf courses (Check out the RiverPines golf course if that’s your thing.)
Johns Creek is home to several of Atlanta’s most prestigious neighborhoods and country clubs. Translation: Homes here don’t come cheap. But with a strong job market and access to Atlanta’s employment opportunities, that higher cost of living might just be worth it.

Milton is known for its rural charm and high standard of living. It’s just outside of Alpharetta and about 30 minutes from Atlanta, which means you’ll get all the perks of big-city life without the crowds.
While much of the land is still zoned for agriculture (hello, bigger lots and open space), Milton has grown into a business and retail hub. It’s even got a strong reputation as a horse town—so don’t be surprised if your neighbors ride by on horseback. And even if you’re not into horses, the trails and scenery make this a beautiful place to live and explore.

Golf Cart City—wait, no—Peachtree City is next on the list. Seriously though, Peachtree City is full of locals who love zipping around town on their golf buggies. In fact, this place is known for its 100-mile network of wooded golf cart paths that connect neighborhoods, schools, parks and shopping centers. The city is also a famous site for celebrities, thanks to its nearby filmmaking studios.
Families love the strong school system in Peachtree City—Fayette County Schools are among the best in the state. Education is a big part of the economy, but if you’re in another line of work, you might need to commute to nearby Atlanta.

Braselton regularly makes safest cities lists—and for good reason. Located northeast of Atlanta, it’s a relaxed, family-friendly town with a couple of standout attractions. One highlight is the Chateau Elan Winery and Resort—a 3,500-acre destination packed with restaurants, spa services, golf and tennis. If dining isn’t your thing, Braselton is also home to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, a massive motorsports facility for pro and amateur drivers.
Just a heads-up for families: There’s no Walmart inside city limits. But if you’re loyal to Kroger or Publix, you’re covered. And hey, there’s a Chick-fil-A (aka “the Lord’s chicken”), so all is well.
