How Your DISC Profile Affects Goal Setting

The DISC Profile System is one of the most important tools we use at Ramsey Solutions to help build culture and grow team unity. Understanding how others think and work can decrease conflicts and increase communication among coworkers.

When you know someone’s personality style, you’re better prepared to talk with them because you understand how they tick. You’re not surprised when someone is very blunt or when someone shuts down at the first sign of conflict. You know the best way to approach a driven leader or a stabilizing assistant.

Knowing your personality style is helpful when interacting with people, but it’s also useful for setting goals. It allows you to play to your strengths rather than your weaknesses. Let’s take a look at goal setting for each DISC profile personality style.

D: Decisive Personality

Decisive people are driven. They’re the hard-charging and want to get stuff done! They’re great at setting goals, but they may struggle with mapping out plans to achieve those goals.

If you scored high on the Decisive scale, break down your major goals into smaller milestones with a timeframe for each one. Stay focused by setting up regular reminders on your phone and calendar.

I: Interactive Personality

You know the interactive personalities. They’re the fun-loving people-pleasers who love to play. They love to set goals and dream up new things to achieve, which can mean a long list of goals with no particular priority.

If you scored high on the Interactive scale, list your goals on paper and prioritize them. Focus on the important, not the urgent. Once you’ve ordered your list, create a specific plan that outlines how you will reach each goal and in what timeframe. Again, put periodic reminders on your calendar so you can stay focused and keep track of your progress.

S: Stabilizing Personality

Stabilizing personalities are loyal team players who like to get along with everyone. They’re slower to act and they dislike change, so setting and working toward goals can be stressful.

If you scored high on the Stabilizing scale, you need to focus on the benefit of reaching new goals. Think about how it will help others and your business, not to mention your personal life. It’s okay if you take longer than most to think about the goals you want to achieve, but don’t get caught up in putting things off, which is a little easier for those with this personality. Set a timeline to make sure your goals are in place by a certain date.

C: Cautious Personality

The cautious personalities are focused on procedure and making sure things are done the right way. They don’t have a problem setting goals, but they do need help prioritizing them, because they want to accomplish it all!

If you scored high on the Cautious scale, focus on the most important goals to accomplish first, and don’t get distracted by trying to achieve several goals at once. Sometimes multitasking can derail your goals. As you work on your goal, remember why it’s important and who’s affected by it. Don’t get so focused on the process that you lose sight of the purpose of the goal.

The better you know your strengths and weaknesses, the better equipped you are to reach goals. And as you become more aware of others’ personality tendencies, you can help coworkers play to their strengths and reach their full potential, too.
