The Beauty of Slowing Down

Among my close group of girlfriends, there have been five babies born in five months. Carter, my son-on-the-way, will be here in a few short weeks and will bring that number to six!

No, we didn’t plan this—that would be very weird. But we have really enjoyed going through this new season of life together.

Our group has changed in many ways in the last year. Conversations revolve less around weekend plans and more around some of the many crazy and appalling things that happen to your body during pregnancy.

We get together less often and go home much earlier. Our priorities have shifted to planning around babies versus going out on spontaneous adventures. And of course, we all are experiencing a joy that we never knew was even possible.

But the one thing I’ve noticed the most is that we’ve all slowed down—I mean really s l o w e d d o w n.

There’s something beautiful about this slowing down. I realized it for the first time about a month ago, when I visited my friend Sarah and her new baby.

Anxiety is real, but it doesn't define you. Get your life back with our new quick read!

I stopped by her house around lunchtime one Saturday with no agenda and no plans. My only purpose was to meet her new little girl. Four hours later, I was still there with them, laughing and talking with nowhere else to be.

Here in the South, we call that visitin’.

I sat there amazed at how the time flew by just being together. How long had it been since I spent quality time with a friend with absolutely no purpose or plan or objective?

In college, Sarah and I would go to each other’s houses just to “hang out.” (Of course in college, when you’re not in class or working or being crazy, you don’t have much else to do but hang out.) As we grew up, graduated and got real jobs, hanging out and visitin’ didn’t qualify as productive anymore.

But maybe in all of our busyness, we’re missing out on something beautiful.

There’s something beautiful about doing less with more love and attention. There’s something beautiful about refusing to rush. There’s something beautiful about allowing more time to be present wherever you are.

There’s something beautiful about simply slowing down.
