New Coordinators
What is Financial Peace University?
First things first—what is this class you’re leading? 🤔 You’re probably going to be asked that a lot while you’re promoting and coordinating the class. Financial Peace University (FPU) is the best way to learn Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps plan to get out of debt, save money, and change your family tree. It’s a nine-week program where you watch video content, follow guided action steps, complete activities, and hold discussions with your class members.
The Role of a Coordinator
A coordinator is someone who organizes and brings people together for an event or gathering and fosters unity (basically making sure everyone is aligned and on mission together).
That unity is so important because your class members are going to come in with all different types of ideas about personal finances, and you will play the vital role that gets them to commit to one way—this plan—of walking through this journey together.
Characteristics of a Coordinator
Be missional. You believe in the plan and the way that FPU teaches about managing money. We want you to make sure everyone in your class is committed to following the plan. You can’t make them do the work, but you can lead them in what it means to follow the 7 Baby Steps.
Be coachable. Watch the videos, absorb the information, and make sure you’re taking in what we’re teaching. You’ll have support from the Ramsey team, so take their tips and advice and try to implement them in your class (it will make your job so much easier—promise!).
Be reliable. Show up early and create an environment that is safe and comfortable for your class members to talk about their struggles (and wins!). Show up emotionally because there will be people that walk into your class with guilt, shame or fear associated with money. Be there to help them and encourage them.
Leading Your Class Well
Guide your class members through the process. Help them understand where they are in the Baby Steps journey and help them identify their next steps over the nine weeks together.
Encourage your class members. Set the tone for everyone to feel excited and engaged, and allow space for them to encourage each other in discussion groups or through messaging outside of class.
Model life on the plan. Make sure you’re living in a way that aligns with the principles. Share your own struggles and wins along the way—make it real and tangible so your class members know they’re not doing this alone.
Promote your class. Don’t assume people are going to flood your class just because it’s associated with Ramsey. Make sure you go out and tell people about it! We have lots of resources to help you promote your class, so be sure to check out the Launch Plan for Your Class in your dashboard.
Don't do it alone. If you’re married, grab your spouse and put them to work setting up chairs and putting out the snacks. Recruit a co-coordinator to help you lead discussions or alternate class weeks if you know you’ve got an upcoming vacation or kid’s baseball game. Join the coordinator Facebook group to share ideas and hear from other rock-star coordinators!
And remember, the Ramsey team is always just an email away when you have any questions.
